Brief history
In the years 1947 – 1949, a group of Russian archeologists, led by
Rudenko, who were working in the Pazyryk Valley, situated in the
Altai mountains on the borders of Siberia and outer Mongolia,
excavated a royal tomb, about 2500 years old, in which there were
things such as clothing, saddles, and an exquisite carpet, had been
preserved by ice.
The Pazyryk rare densely knotted carpet, 6 ft 7 in x 6 ft in size,
is made of wool and regarded to be the earliest carpet up to the
present moment. Enjoying surprisingly high quality, there are 232
knots per square inch of it. It is supposed that the precious carpet
could have come from Susa in ancient persia througn the Silk Route
in the 6 th century B.C. It has a red ground, and shows
horses, eagles, and stags.
The main borders are very wide. In outer border Persian horsemen
could be observed. Lotus-flowers are predominant as well. Presently,
The Pazyryk Carpet is in the Hermitage Museum, Liningrad.
